British Open Preview - Pot Bunkers

The Open Championship is at Muirfield this year which is located in Gullane, Scotland. The course was built in 1744 and has hosted the Open Championship fifteen times, most recently in 2002 when Ernie Els lifted the trophy.  It is fitting that Ernie is the current Open Champion and the last to win at Muirfield.

Murifields bunkers are one of its trademarks, there are close to 150 in all, each of them are more than capable of affecting play. They are deep and rarely will a player be able to reach the green from any of the fairway bunkers. The 1st and 18th holes are indicative of just how hard the bunkers are, as both these holes are sprinkled with pot bunkers that are just looking to gobble up an errant drive. To add insult to injury the land was claimed from the sea and to this day the bunkers still have sea shells and pebbles in them.
