Power Development with Mike Boyle

On the 2008 season premiere of “Golf Fitness Academy presented by Titleist”, Co-hosts Dave Phillips and Dr. Greg Rose will introduce one of the most renowned strength and conditioning coaches in the United States, Mike Boyle. Mike will highlight some simple stretches and strength training techniques that will help increase your power.

    Episode Details:

    • Using something as simple as a foam roller Mike shows how to increase the elasticity in your muscles, by rolling out any knots that are causing tightness and inhibiting your ability to increase your range of motion.
    • The first segment will attack your glutes which are a key muscle in stabilizing your pivot.
    • Then Mike shows how to use a foam roller to increase the range of motion in your thoracic spine. This will help your rotation in the backswing which will help increase your power.
    • The Shoulder and Lat mobilization techniques are next which will help increase the width of your backswing and give you the ability to add speed to your swing.

    Strength in the Muscles

    Lower back pain and tightness in the hips and mid back are a major problem for the majority of golfers. Mike demonstrates the correct way to increase mobility in your hips, to help reduce the stress on the lower back.

    • His standing hip stretch will help target your hips like never before.
    • Hip flexor stretches that targets the front of the hip.
    • Hip flexor stretch with crunch.
    • Hip rotator stretch with a partner to isolate the hip capsule.

    Power Development

    • Lower body strength training with simple half squat jumps.
    • Increase height to add another dimension
    • Use of equipment like the Shuttle MVP to develop leg strength. Learn More About the Shuttle MVP

    • Upper body strength training showing the use of medicine balls and a rebounder as well as the addition of rotary power. All helping to simulate the golf swing motion.

    Strength Phase:

    Adding power to your workout. Mike adds the use of a cable cross machine and a Flowin Slide Board to show a great upper body strengthening routine.

    • Half kneeling X pull downs - these can also be done with bands if a machine is not available.
    • Basic pushup to help chest and upper back strength.
    • The use of a Flowin Slide Board is used to demonstrate a lunge to help build leg strength.
