British Open Preview - Playing in the wind.

Thu Jul 18, 2013 by Dave Phillips

Although Muirfield is a links type course which resides by the sea, it is an unusaul layout. Most links courses run along the coast and then back again leading to two sets of nine holes, each of which face roughly in the same direction. Muirfield, however, was one of the first links courses to depart from this arrangement, as it is layed out in two loops of nine holes, one of which is clockwise and the other counterclockwise.

Assuming that the wind direction remains the same throughout the round, every hole on the course has a different apparent wind direction from the tee. No more than three consecutive holes follow the same direction at any stage.
